The Houston Street Center is more than a place where seniors mingle, it is a place where they can explore new activities, learn new skills and focus on their health and well being.
The Senior HeART Program is a health and wellness program for adults age 50 and over that is committed to promoting an "age-friendly" community by providing opportunities that emphasize physical activity, creative expression, peer support and community building. Senior HeART offers courses in aquatics, fitness and health, performing and visual arts. Courses run in eight-week cycles and vary each session. Better Bones is a new addition to The Senior HeART Program. Through a partnership with Beth Israel Latino Health Institute Better Bones will conduct a series of health screenings to identify seniors who are at risk for developing osteoporosis. Once identified, seniors diagnosed with or at risk for osteoporosis will have access to a variety of activities designed to improve bone density, strength, balance and flexibility, and to reduce the risk of falls and fractures. Better Bones is a new addition to The Senior HeART Program. Through a partnership with Beth Israel Latino Health Institute Better Bones will conduct a series of health screenings to identify seniors who are at risk for developing osteoporosis. Once identified, seniors diagnosed with or at risk for osteoporosis will have access to a variety of activities designed to improve bone density, strength, balance and flexibility, and to reduce the risk of falls and fractures.
Better Bones offers a variety of ways to help seniors build stronger, healthier bones, including:
• Osteoporosis screenings conducted on-site at the Houston Street Center by medical professionals from Beth Israel Latino Health Institute.
• Physical activity at least three times a week with two fitness electives and one
required course offered exclusively to Better Bones participants.
• Monthly educational activities led by health experts from Beth Israel Latino Health Institute emphasizing older adult health. Topics will include bone health and fall prevention, as well as diet and exercise that can help slow bone loss.
• Informational brochures and handouts focusing on nutrition, bone health and fall prevention.
• A supportive, fun and healthy environment to enhance well-being and motivation.
• Must be enrolled in The Senior HeART Program and age 60 or over.
• Participation in an Ultrasound Bone Densitometry Screening of the heel resulting in a score that indicates low bone mass density.
• Willingness to commit to full participation in Better Bones (with a suggested commitment of 3 years).
